The Pench Tiger Reserve is named right after the Pench river, which flows from north to south by way of the Reserve. The Reserve is located inside the southern reaches on the Satpura hill ranges within the Seoni and Chhindwara districts within the Madhya Pradesh state of India. The terrain is undulating, with most of the region covered by tiny hill ranges, steeply sloping around the sides.

The Reserve is situated in an area that holds a significant place inside the organic background of Central India. The description of its all-natural beauty, richness in flora and fauna has appeared in many wildlife books dating back to 17th century. Books published within the 19th and early 20th century by famous naturalists like Captain J. Forsyth and Rudyard Kipling's Jungle E-book explicitly current the detailed panorama of nature's abundance on this tract.

An intensive forest belt extends in 3 directions, north, east and south, covering forest tracts of Seoni, Balaghat and Nagpur districts. The contiguous forest on the southern side in the Maharashtra state of India, initially notified as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Nationwide Park has become lately included inside the Venture Tiger network by the exact same identify as this Reserve. A dam was constructed on the Pench river on south-eastern boundary from the Reserve.

The area is criss-crossed by many seasonal streams and nalas. The Pench river flowing through the central line with the Reserve is dry by the April-end but numerous water pools locally referred to as dohs are discovered, which serve as waterholes for wild animals. Some perennial springs also exist in this region. On the other hand, the water sources are not suitably distributed, therefore significant area remains unutilized by the wild animals. The Pench reservoir in the center from the Reserve is the only major water supply throughout pinch period.

Because the prey concentration is substantial along the Pench river, tigers normally inhabit this belt. Leopards, although, usually run inside the peripheral areas but are sometimes observed in deep forests also. Jungle cats are generally observed. Leopard cats, Tiny Indian Civets and Palm Civets are common but observed extremely hardly ever.

Wild canines are generally noticed in packs of 12 to 15, around Chhedia, Jamtara, Bodanala and Pyorthadi locations of the Reserve. Wild Boar is ubiquitous. Sloth bear occupy hilly, rocky out crops and favour mahul bel infested forest. Chinkara is current in rather tiny quantity and is found in open areas around Turia, Telia, Dudhgaon villages.
